Youth Club Program Description:
We follow the OCA Skill Awards program, a curling skills program developed by the Ontario Curling Association, and one that is used across Canada. Each curler receives a booklet outlining the set of skills to learn to earn a badge signifying that they have mastered that level of the program. The skills awards are applicable to all ages of youth, and the material fees are included in your registration fee.
The program includes six levels: Little Rock, Red Challenge, Blue Challenge, Bronze Bar, Silver Medallion, and Gold Star. We focus on the Little Rock program when new curlers, and will introduce the red challenge and more for those who move onto the next level. For curlers that are new to the Club but perhaps have some curling experience, we'll start with the Red Challenge and move on from there. Wherever a curler leaves off at the end of the season, that is where will we pick back up next time we are on the ice together.
The skills outlined in the Skill Awards program are identical to those skills that are practiced in practices on Wednesdays, in bonspiels if we have curlers who want to put a team together, and exhibition games. (We hope to organize one at the end of the season with the Canmore GCC's Youth Club).
Learning throughout the skill awards program, and graduating from different levels (each at their own pace) is an excellent achievement that every curler should be proud of. At the end of each season we will award crests and personalized certificates for those who have graduated levels. It is an enjoyable event where curlers can show their parents/guardians' how to throw rocks at houses, and enjoy snacks and social time afterward.
